Len Steiner – Principal
Len Steiner is the founder and principal of Steiner Consulting Group, which he launched in 1987. Throughout his career, he has made significant contributions to the operational efficiencies, sales growth, and profitability of food companies around the world. Today Len works with a number of top retail, food service, and meat-processing organizations that need to optimize their market performance in the food business. Prior to consulting, he earned his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering from the University of Minnesota, College of Science and Engineering, and a Master of Business Administration (with his thesis written on CME Cattle Futures contracts) from the University of Minnesota. Len has also held leadership roles with various global retail, food service, and meat-processing companies, giving him a unique and broad perspective on the industry. His resume includes roles with Ponderosa, Supervalu, Hormel, Tyson, and others. He draws from his diverse experience, including designing meat-processing plants and implementing buying and distribution systems. His creative approach to understanding needs of his clients, especially the meat industry, is what sets him apart. He sees the “nuts and bolts” of the operation along with the big picture economics and the industry at large.
Altin Kalo – Economist
Altin Kalo is the chief economist at Steiner Consulting Group. His team oversees market analysis, forecasts, and analytics for clients, with a focus on fundamental analysis of commodity markets, ranging from livestock to grains to soft commodities. Altin oversees customized analytics reporting for clients and also works with hedge fund and futures trading clients to provide them with actionable intelligence and fundamental market analysis. He is also the lead writer of the Daily Livestock Report (dailylivestockreport.com), providing the food industry with a daily review of key market drivers.Altin has honed his expertise in the food and agriculture space over 20 years. In the early days he worked with farmers across Rural Virginia to collect data for his Operations Research thesis and then as part of the Agricultural Economics Department at Virginia Tech. At Steiner, Altin has worked with a variety of retailers, food service organizations, processors, and distributors such as Associated Grocers, Kroger, Subway, and McDonald’s. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Kenyon College and went on to earn his graduate degree in Agricultural and Applied Economics from Virginia Tech.
Alex Davis – Buying/Supply Chain Management
Alex Davis leads the buying/supply chain management division. His team works closely with clients to develop customized strategic buying programs and risk management strategies for a wide variety of proteins and other commodities. Alex has spent more than 25 years in the food industry. His experience began behind the stoves in restaurants and progressed to manufacturing, operations, supply chain management and procurement. Today, Alex focuses his work leading Steiner’s buying division. Alex holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Bentley University, a supply chain certification from Northwestern University and a Culinary Arts Degree from Johnson & Wales University.
